Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1:
Add Coffee Powder: Place 2–3 tablespoons of filter coffee powder into the upper compartment of the filter.
Press the Powder (Optional): Some filters come with a small pressing disc. Gently press the coffee powder down with the disc. This helps to create a dense layer, allowing the coffee to brew slowly and deeply.
Step 2:
Boil Water: Bring about 100 ml of water to a rolling boil.
Pour Water Over Coffee: Pour the boiling water over the coffee powder in the upper compartment. Be careful to pour in a circular motion to ensure even extraction.
Cover and Wait: Place the lid on the filter and allow the coffee to drip into the lower compartment. This process can take about 10–15 minutes, yielding a strong coffee decoction.
Step 3:
Boil the Milk: Heat the milk until it’s steaming. For an authentic taste, use whole milk.
Add Sugar (Optional): If you like your coffee sweetened, add sugar to the milk and stir until dissolved.
Step 4:
Pour Decoction into a Cup: Once the coffee decoction is ready, pour about 2–3 tablespoons (or more, depending on your taste) of it into a cup.
Add Milk: Add the hot milk to the decoction and stir well. The ratio is typically 1 part decoction to 3 parts milk, but you can adjust this based on how strong you like your coffee.
Step 5:
Pour Between Cups: For the characteristic South Indian coffee froth, pour the coffee back and forth between two cups from a height, creating a smooth, frothy top.
And that’s it! You have a delicious cup of traditional South Indian filter coffee ready to enjoy.
